Why Theology Matters

Why Theology Matters

By Natasha Tubbs, DMin

At its most basic level, theology is the study of God. Its purpose is to deepen our understanding of who God is, how he relates to his creation (especially humanity and our condition), and how his redemptive work unfolds in relationship to humankind.

Why Is Theology Needed?

When we engage others in apologetic conversations, sound theology guides those interactions by ensuring that we present faithful doctrinal truths,  truths that are essential to a right understanding of God and to the relationship between the individual and him.1

Theology Reveals the Nature of God

Understanding who God is helps us answer questions about him. Theology shows us his love, justice, and holiness, so we can explain our faith with confidence (1 Peter 3:15).

Theology Anchors Us in Scripture

Apologetics must be rooted in Scripture, not just human reasoning or emotion. Theology helps us reflect God’s truth in our defense. As 2 Timothy 3:16 teaches, all Scripture is God-breathed and equips us to teach, correct, and defend the faith faithfully.

Theology Prevents Misrepresentation

Without sound theology, defending the gospel risks eisegesis, “reading meaning into the text” rather than exegesis, “leading meaning out of Scripture.”2  We must first understand what we believe before we can clearly explain why we believe it.

Theology Shapes the Christian Worldview

Apologetics engages competing worldviews such as atheism and relativism. Theology gives us the lens to understand reality and respond to challenges, keeping God at the center of the Christian worldview, the truth we defend.3

Theology Clarifies Core Doctrines

Core doctrines such as the Trinity, salvation, and the resurrection are central to apologetics. Theology gives us clarity, helping us defend the faith faithfully rather than presenting a watered-down version.

Theology Builds Confidence

Knowing God deeply gives us confidence in defending our faith. Theology helps us see that we’re not just arguing ideas, but sharing eternal truth.

Why Does Theology Matter in Defense of the Gospel?

If apologetics is the defense of the Christian faith, theology is what anchors us in the truth of that faith. It provides the content, clarity, and framework for what we are defending. Without theology, apologetics can become superficial or off course, more concerned with winning debates than faithfully representing the gospel. Theology is not merely intellectual knowledge; it is the foundation that makes meaningful apologetic conversations possible.
